How it works

Annual pay is the hourly wage times the hours you are paid in a year: hours per week times the weeks you are paid for. Weeks you are paid for are the weeks in your year minus any unpaid time off. Going the other way, the hourly wage is the salary divided by those same paid hours.

Monthly, biweekly and weekly figures spread the annual pay evenly over 12, 26 and 52 pay periods, the way a salary is paid. If you take unpaid weeks off, these are averages over the year rather than what you earn in a week you work. The daily figure is what you earn on a day you work: hourly wage times hours per week, divided by days per week.

The federal minimum wage line shows what the same hours would pay at $7.25 an hour, for comparison. Many states and cities set a higher minimum.

Formula

paid weeks = weeks per year − unpaid weeks off
paid hours = hours per week × paid weeks
annual = hourly × paid hours (hourly = annual ÷ paid hours)
monthly        = annual ÷ 12
biweekly       = annual ÷ 26
weekly         = annual ÷ 52
daily = hourly × hours per week ÷ days per week

Example

At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year with 2 unpaid weeks off, you are paid for 2,000 hours: $50,000 a year, $4,166.67 a month, $1,923.08 every two weeks, $961.54 a week averaged over the year, and $200 for each 8-hour day worked.

A federal General Schedule GS-1 step 1 salary of $22,584 (2026) over 40 hours and 52.175 weeks (2,087 hours) is $10.82 an hour, the rate OPM publishes.

Assumptions and limitations

  • This is an estimate for planning. It is for informational and educational purposes and is not financial, tax or legal advice.
  • All figures are gross pay before taxes and deductions. Use the take-home pay calculator to see what reaches your bank account.
  • Every paid hour is paid at the same rate. Overtime premiums, shift differentials, tips, commissions and bonuses are not included; see the overtime pay calculator.
  • Paid vacation and holidays count as paid weeks. Only time off without pay should be entered as unpaid weeks.
  • A 52-week year is 364 days. A calendar year has 52 weeks and one or two days, which is why federal pay uses 2,087 hours (52.175 weeks of 40 hours) rather than 2,080.
  • The $7.25 federal minimum wage (29 U.S.C. §206, unchanged since July 24, 2009) is shown for reference. State and local minimums are often higher, and some workers are exempt from the federal minimum.

Frequently asked questions

How much is $20 an hour a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour is 2,080 hours × $20 = $41,600 a year before taxes. Two unpaid weeks off lowers that to 2,000 hours, or $40,000.

Why do some converters use 2,080 hours and others 2,087?

2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks. A year is actually 52 weeks plus a day or two, and federal pay rules (5 U.S.C. §5504) average that out to 2,087 hours. Set weeks per year to 52.175 to use 2,087.
