How it works
Vent openings are rated by their net free area (NFA): the open area left after screens and louvers, printed on the vent's label in square inches. The typical rule sets the total NFA as a fraction of the floor area of the space being vented, and the total is converted from square feet to square inches (× 144).
Attics: the 2021 International Residential Code, R806.2 (2021 IRC R806.2/R408.2 model text, read via UpCodes' Colorado adoption; unchanged in the 2024 IRC), sets 1/150 of the vented space, and allows 1/300 when, in climate zones 6, 7 and 8, a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling, and 40 to 50% of the required area is upper vents within 3 ft of the ridge, the rest in the bottom third of the attic. The area is split between exhaust (upper) and intake (lower) vents; a 50/50 split with exhaust no more than intake is the usual balanced layout, and Air Vent's ridge-vent brochure (AVI023, 09/2018) recommends 1/150 split half intake, half exhaust.
Crawl spaces: R408.2 of the same code sets 1 sq ft of openings per 150 sq ft of under-floor area, with one opening within 3 ft of each corner, reducible to 1/1,500 where the ground is covered with a Class I vapor retarder.
The vent count is each side's NFA divided by the NFA per linear foot (ridge, continuous soffit and edge vents) or per vent (roof, gable, soffit and foundation vents), rounded up. Air Vent's ShingleVent II ridge vent is 18 sq in per linear foot (installation sheet SVIIIS081723B, 2023; brochure AVI023, 09/2018); its continuous soffit and Edge Vent intake are 9 sq in per foot and its Airhawk RVP61 roof vent is 61 sq in (airvent.com, retrieved 2026-10-01); its FA109000 foundation vent is 36 sq in (2508FAIS072225A, 2025).
Formula
NFA (sq ft) = floor area ÷ 150, 300 or 1,500 NFA (sq in) = NFA (sq ft) × 144 exhaust NFA = NFA × exhaust share %; intake NFA = NFA × (100 − exhaust share) % vents = side NFA ÷ NFA per foot (or per vent), rounded up foundation vents = NFA ÷ NFA per vent, rounded up
Example
A 1,500 sq ft attic at 1/150 needs 10 sq ft, or 1,440 sq in, of net free area. Split 50/50, that is 720 sq in each: 720 ÷ 18 = 40 ft of ShingleVent II ridge vent and 720 ÷ 9 = 80 ft of continuous soffit vent, the result of Air Vent's own formula, ½ NFA × 144 ÷ 18 (AVI023, 09/2018).
A 1,500 sq ft crawl space at 1/150 also needs 1,440 sq in: 40 foundation vents of 36 sq in. With a Class I ground vapor retarder (1/1,500) it is 144 sq in: 4 vents.
Assumptions and limitations
- These are the typical rules from the 2021 IRC (R806.2 for attics, R408.2 for crawl spaces; model text, unchanged in the 2024 IRC); this page is not a code check. The code your jurisdiction has adopted, with its amendments, governs, and the 1/300 and 1/1,500 reductions carry conditions (vapor retarders, vent placement) that this calculator does not verify.
- NFA figures come from the vent's label; screens, insect mesh and louvers are already counted in the labelled NFA. Defaults are Air Vent products, shown as examples.
- The split between exhaust and intake is an input. Mixing exhaust types (for example a ridge vent with gable or powered vents) and unvented, conditioned attics or crawl spaces are outside this calculation.
- Crawl-space openings also need one within 3 ft of each corner (unless the ground has a Class I vapor retarder and the openings give cross ventilation), which can raise the count above the area-based figure.
- The result is an estimate. It is not a substitute for the applicable code, the vent manufacturer's instructions or a licensed professional.
Frequently asked questions
How is attic vent area split between intake and exhaust?
The IRC's 1/300 exception requires upper (exhaust) vents to provide 40 to 50% of the total, with the rest in the bottom third of the attic, so exhaust never exceeds intake. Air Vent's ridge-vent literature (AVI023, 09/2018) uses half intake and half exhaust, and its VenturiVent Plus sheet (AVI017R, 07/2016) says to install an amount of intake equal to the ridge vent's exhaust NFA.
